Dream Theater Are Back in the Studio: Album #17 Is Officially Underway

Progressive metal giants Dream Theater are already looking ahead to their next chapter, and fans have another reason to get excited. Just over a year after releasing Parasomnia, Dream Theater have confirmed they're back in the studio working on their 17th album. On October 13, 2026, the band shared a photo of all five members together at Ytse Jam Studios with a short but exciting message:
“#DT17 is underway…”
Five words weren't necessary. Three were enough to get the progressive metal community talking.
Another Chapter With Mike Portnoy
What makes this upcoming album particularly exciting is the return of the band's classic chemistry. Founding drummer Mike Portnoy rejoined Dream Theater in October 2023 after 13 years away, reuniting with James LaBrie, John Petrucci, John Myung and Jordan Rudess. Their 2025 album, Parasomnia, marked Portnoy's first studio recording with Dream Theater since 2009's Black Clouds & Silver Linings.
Now, with the reunited lineup preparing its second album together, the band has another opportunity to build on that reunion rather than simply celebrate it.
What Do We Know About Album #17?
For now, Dream Theater are keeping details under wraps. The band has confirmed that work is underway at Ytse Jam Studios, but there's no announced release date, album title, tracklist or lead single. And while fans will undoubtedly be hoping for another collection of complex arrangements, massive guitar riffs and Portnoy's unmistakable drumming, the musical direction remains a mystery.
The Next Era of Dream Theater
More than four decades into their career, Dream Theater continue to be one of progressive metal's defining names, known for pushing technical musicianship and ambitious songwriting to extraordinary lengths. With Portnoy back behind the kit and another record officially in progress, the band is entering an exciting new chapter.
Whether album #17 arrives in 2027 or later remains to be seen. But the wheels are turning, the band is together, and new Dream Theater music is officially on the way.
