THE LEATHER JACKET

If there's one piece at the center of Johnny Ramone's style, it's the black leather biker jacket. Usually thrown over a simple T-shirt and paired with worn denim, the jacket gave Johnny an instantly tougher silhouette without needing anything elaborate underneath. More importantly, it became part of the Ramones' identity. Leather jackets existed in rebellious subcultures long before the band, but the Ramones took that familiar symbol of rebellion, stripped away the excess of '70s rock fashion and made it part of a new punk uniform.

THE T-SHIRT

Johnny's T-shirts helped keep the outfit grounded. Plain tees and graphic shirts worked because they weren't competing with everything else. That's one of the defining characteristics of his entire wardrobe: nothing looks precious. The Ramones' matching shaggy, bowl-like haircuts became almost as recognizable as their leather jackets. Johnny wore his dark hair straight, heavy and forward, with a long fringe framing his face. THE RAMONES UNIFORM
