Bloodsugar

Hailing from Chico, California, Bloodsugar is an alt-rock band fueled by distortion, vulnerability, and catharsis. Their name, intentionally spelled as one word, comes straight from real life: frontwoman Lys Lourdes’ blood sugar levels drop easily, and what started as a personal quirk quickly became the perfect metaphor for music that lives in emotional extremes. Sharp highs, heavy lows, and no holding back.
The band officially began taking shape in late 2024 after Lys’ solo project crossed paths with a band made up of Joe Stone (drums, backing vocals), Christian Crandall (lead guitar), and Jordan Wiley (bass). After sharing bills and filming a live session together, the chemistry was undeniable. When Christian nervously floated the idea of starting something new, Lys was already all in. By February 2025, Bloodsugar played their first show, and haven’t slowed down since.
Musically, Bloodsugar pulls from a wide range of influences that collide into a raw, guitar-forward sound. You’ll hear shades of My Chemical Romance, Hole, Momma, AFI, and The Smashing Pumpkins, mixed with Joe’s love for King Gizzard and Jordan’s jazz-fusion leanings like BADBADNOTGOOD. The common thread is loud guitars and searing lyrics, the foundation of what the band half-jokingly describes as bubblegrunge or angry girl music. A label they wear proudly.

Their first completed song, “conditions,” set the tone early. Written about being taken for granted and learning when love comes with strings attached, it established Bloodsugar’s lyrical focus on boundaries, power, and emotional honesty. The band has since gained strong traction with “holden caulfield (civil war),” a track that’s resonated deeply with queer and femme listeners looking for a safe space to release anger and reclaim their voice.
Bloodsugar’s creative process is deeply collaborative. Lys writes all the lyrics, while she and Christian shape the early demos before bringing them to the full band. Songs are stress-tested live before ever hitting the studio, a process that helps refine their energy and emotional impact. True to their DIY ethos, Joe and Lys handle recording, mixing, and mastering entirely in-house.
Live, Bloodsugar is loud, messy, and unapologetically cathartic. Shows are designed to be a release, for the band and the crowd. From mass shout-alongs of “f*** you, debbie!” to the climactic moment in “trebuchet” where Lys rolls through the crowd with her guitar, Bloodsugar leaves nothing on the stage.

Their debut performance on February 7, 2025 at Chico’s Naked Lounge was nothing short of electric, reportedly breaking attendance records and setting the bar high from day one. Since then, standout moments include their packed single release show for “holden caulfield (civil war)” at Duffy’s and appearing in a Universal Audio ad filmed at Tiny Telephone in Oakland, an early industry nod for a young band on the rise.
Looking ahead, Bloodsugar is currently preparing their debut EP, slated for release in February 2026, alongside a West Coast spring tour. Five years from now? Bigger stages, louder amps, and even better songs.
Until then, Bloodsugar continues to build a fiercely loyal following, one sweaty, cathartic show at a time.
Keep Riffing.
